2 suspects in custody for murder of Dwyane Wade’s cousin

Two brothers who were on parole for prior criminal activity have been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of NBA star Dwyane Wade’s cousin, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

26-year-old Darwin Sorrells Jr. and Derren Sorells, 22, were also charged with attempted murder in Friday’s shooting.

32-year-old Nykea Aldridge, a mother of four, was pushing her baby in a stroller near a school where she planned to register her children on Chicago’s South Side when she was shot in the head and arm.

Cmdr. Brendan Deenihan said in a news conference Sunday that Aldridge was not the intended target, but rather a driver who had just dropped off passengers in the neighborhood.

Deenihan said video of the incident exist, but no weapon was recovered. Police are not sure of the weapon’s location.

CPD Superintendent Eddie Johnson said the suspects are an example of the city’s problem with repeat offenders. According to department records, Darwin Sorrells was sentenced to six years in prison in January 2013 on a gun charge. He was later released early on parole.

Derren Sorrells is a known gang member, officials say. He was on parole for motor vehicle theft and escape, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. He also added that Derren has six felony arrests on his record.

In July alone, there were 65 homicides — the most for that month since 2006.

Dozens of people gathered at a Chicago church Sunday for a vigil in memory of Aldridge.

“They don’t care who they shoot and they don’t fear the consequences,” Johnson said.
